First let me tell you that I make sure to eat a good amount of healthy fats daily -I repeat “Healthy Fats”! The list below of coconut oil benefits will blow your mind. It is a staple for me literally every single day and I didn’t always do this, but let me tell you what this has done for me…

Before eating healthy fat I was your typical everything low fat, watch my calories girl. Very active and very healthy food otherwise. BUT, here is the problem, I literally never stayed full. No joke, I would eat and be hungry within 30-60 minutes no matter what. I carried food with me at all times. It was annoying, out of control and frustrating! I had no idea why I was hungry all the time – I ate a good amount of protein, lots of veggies and healthy carbs but I just could not stay full.  I chalked it up to a good metabolism – fingers crossed that I was just one of the lucky ones:-) NOPE! I still had extra weight (belly weight especially) that I couldn’t get rid of, still had minimal energy most of the time, and don’t forget that voice in my head constantly telling me to eat! So here I was eating non-stop, husband eating 3 large meals and staying full (mind-you carb filled meals) but I was still starving, my energy was mediocre, health was better but not ideal. Here is what I did….I simply added 1 tbsp of grass fed butter to my already healthy breakfast; eggs and avocado. That’s it-just 1 tbsp-the only thing I did different on one random morning. What happened blew my mind! I was full for 2 hours longer than ever before-EVER!! Normally I would eat breakfast, wait an hour, eat a snack, wait an hour, eat lunch and so on. But Nope not this day! I was good until lunch….and so, began a beautiful relationship with ~Fat~ and my life has been forever changed!

Coconut is high in saturated fat; however, it’s the “GOOD” saturated fat. More than half of this saturated fat comes from lauric acid, a unique lipid that battles bacteria and improves cholesterol scores.  So what else can coconut oil do for you? Well it’s an energy source, good for your skin and hair, aides in digestion so it can benefit those suffering with Crohn’s disease and irritable bowel syndrome, and can improve thyroid function. Studies have shown it can also reduce belly fat and it has been shown to improve diabetes as well, because it keeps blood glucose levels in check

Coconut oil as a “saturated fat” is not the culprit for heart disease as has been claimed. Heart disease prevention actually begins with consuming a good quality saturated fat such as virgin coconut oil. Coconut oil regulates blood cholesterol levels as well as triglycerides and therefore helps with heart disease prevention and treatment. Research indicates that coconut oil prevents oxidization of cholesterol and heart disease prevention begins by normalizing bodily functions and virgin coconut oil does just that!

Types of coconut oil:

Traditional Coconut oilTRADITIONAL COCONUT OIL: Traditional coconut oil is solid at room temperature and white in color. There are different forms of this type of coconut oil; virgin, refined, unrefined as well as the methods in which the oil was been extracted like quick drying, wet milled, cold pressed and expeller-pressed. To keep it basic refined is further strained and essentially tasteless. Still holds benefits but not as much as unrefined coconut oil or MCT oil as noted below. Unrefined will have a fragrant coconut flavor and will be superior to refined.

MCT OilMCT OIL: What is MCT oil? MCT stands for Medium Chain Trigycerides, as opposed to long chain triglycerides (LCT), which are found in most foods. It is comprised primarily of caprylic and capric fatty acids, is odorless and in liquid form at room temperature instead of solid. Why is it better?: Ready to step back into science class for a moment? Ok in short: Coconut oils are labeled by the length of their carbon chains: C6, C8, C10, C12. Your body metabolizes MCT’s differently than LCT’s. MCT’s are converted to energy much quicker and can be used by the body and the brain faster than LCT’s, which must be processed by the liver first.
